This is a screening questionnaire that will help researchers identify viable participants for a research study that will take place THIS semester, Spring 2025. Completion of this questionnaire does not guarantee that you will be invited to participate.
Those who are invited to participate and complete ALL study activities will receive a $70 Amazon gift card once all study activities have ended, which includes:
-
Online Informed consent questionnaire - This one question, online questionnaire will describe various aspects of the research being conducted, so that you may make an educated decision whether or not you wish to participate.
-
Online background questionnaires - You will be asked to complete six online background questionnaires. The questionnaires will consist primarily of Likert statements where you select from a list of options the one you feel is best. Data collected will include basic demographic data, your perceptions of your English writing skills, writing strategies utilized, and prior use and experiences with generative AI. There are no right or wrong answers; I am just interested in your experiences and opinions. Each questionnaire is estimated to take 5 - 10 minutes to complete.
-
Writing Session #1 and online experience questionnaire - You will be asked to attend
a two-hour, in-person writing session located on the RIT campus in a computer lab. During this session, you will be given a writing prompt to which you will compose a response without the use of generative AI. Your computer screen and video will be recorded during this session using Zoom (only the researchers on this project will have access to the recording). There are no right or wrong responses, I just ask that you put forth your best effort. Once you are finished composing your response, you will be asked to take an online experience questionnaire to provide data about your writing process.
-
Prompt Engineering Workshop - You will be asked to attend
a one-hour, in-person workshop in a computer lab located on the RIT campus. The workshop will cover how generative AI can be used to provide support during the writing process, as well as effective prompt engineering techniques.
-
Writing Session #2 and online experience questionnaire - You will be asked to attend
a two-hour, in-person writing session located on the RIT campus in a computer lab. During this session, you will be given a writing prompt to which you will compose a response. You will be informed during the session whether or not you will be allowed to use generative AI to support you in composing your response. Your computer screen and video will be recorded during this session using Zoom (only the researchers on this project will have access to the recording). There are no right or wrong responses, I just ask that you put forth your best effort. Once you are finished composing your response, you will be asked to take an online experience questionnaire to provide data about your writing process and perceptions (and possible use) of generative AI.
Please complete the following questions to the best of your availability. If you have questions about the research, you may contact the lead researcher, Dr. Elissa Weeden at Elissa.Weeden@rit.edu.
