Examining and Comparing the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in Student and Professional UX Designers
We would like to invite you to take part in our research study. Before you decide if you wish to take part, we would like you to understand why the research is being undertaken and what it will involve. Please take your time to read the following information carefully and feel free to ask any questions. If you agree to take part in the study, you will be asked to indicate consent by continuing to the demographic’s questionnaire. Thank you for your time.
Purpose of the Research:
The purpose of our study is to examine, compare and contrast the use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) between student designers and professional UX designers. We would like to interview and observe designers from these populations to understand how they use GAI to enhance their design process, as well as their outlooks on the use of GAI in the UX industry in the future. You will be entered into a prize draw to receive $20 for the questionnaire (1 in 500 chance due to us looking for 500 participants), and an additional draw for $50 if you partake in the interview (1 in 30 chance due to us looking for 30 participants).
Explanation of Procedures:
This study will contain two parts: an online questionnaire and an interview/contextual inquiry (the interview can either be remote or in-person depending on your preference). The questionnaire will contain questions about the use of AI tools in UX for both students and professionals. You may be invited to participate in the second part of the study which is the interview/contextual inquiry. This will include time to ask more questions and you will be able to give more detailed answers. We may also ask you to demonstrate how you use these tools so that we can observe.
Who can take part in the study?
You must be over 18 years or older to take part in this study and either a professional UX designer or a student who aims to become a professional UX designer.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
In our experience, people enjoy taking part in research as they are helping to develop new technology. Your involvement will help us understand ways in which generative AI can be utilized in UX Design to improve efficiency and productivity.
How long will the study take to complete?
The questionnaire portion will take no more than 15 minutes to complete. If you are selected to partake in the interview portion, it will take no more than 45 minutes to complete.
What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
We don’t anticipate any risks to you but there may be some we have not anticipated and we hope that the task will be enjoyable. The timing of the remote session will be discussed with you. All questions will be optional.
Use of my information
You do not have to take part in the interview, and you can change your mind at any point when taking part. We will use your data on the basis that it is necessary for the conduct of research, which is an activity in the public interest. The data we use for analysis and publication will not include any names, which will have been removed during the transcription process.
The data and results of the study may be used in future publications and in the event of publication may also be incorporated as open access into databases alongside the paper (e.g., stored on the ACM digital library https://dl.acm.org). For example, this can include a typed transcript of the discussion that took place during the interview (certain information that is deemed sensitive will be removed such as names of people). In doing this, we hope the dissemination of our findings will inform the future professional practice of researchers for improving resources for designers looking to conduct more user testing.
